Green Roofs · For Architects Your green roof contractor, from membrane to sedum.

Green roof installation for architects, garden designers and main contractors in Sheffield and North East Derbyshire. We take the waterproofing, the electronic leak test and the Fatra sedum layer as one roofing package, so the roof under the planting is laid and tested by single ply specialists.

What we take on

Your green roof subcontractor, and who does the rest.

We take the waterproofing, the leak test and the sedum layer as one package. Everything else stays with the rest of the design team, and we work alongside them.

Ours: the roof under the plants

  • Root-resistant single ply membrane, with a warm roof build-up underneath where the design calls for one
  • Outlets and edge trims
  • An electronic integrity test over the finished membrane, before anything goes on top
  • Protection fleece, then pre-grown Fatra sedum trays clipped together
  • The edge detail the design calls for: up to the upstand or parapet, a pebble margin, or an aluminium guard
  • Manufacturer warranty registration and the O&M pack at handover

Alongside us: the rest of the team

Architect
The design, and the specification if you write one.
Structural engineer
The structural design and calculations, sized to the saturated load.
Main contractor or builder
The structure, ready for the roof.
Landscaper or garden designer
The garden and the planting around the building.

You can’t see a leak under a planted roof, so every green roof we lay gets an electronic integrity test over the finished membrane before anything goes on top. The homeowner’s side of the same roof is on our green roofs page.

For your drawings

Fatra Modular Tray, by the numbers.

Fatra's published figures for the sedum tray system we lay now. Saturated loads are the trays fully wet: the figure your structural engineer needs.

Confirm every figure against the current Fatra datasheet before you finalise drawings.

Tray size
540 × 540 × 90 mm Recycled polypropylene carrier. The trays clip together on a protection fleece over the membrane.
Vegetation
30–40 mm, pre-grown In 60 mm of 100% recycled growing medium. Green and established on day one.
Saturated load: sedum
65 kg/m²
Saturated load: sedum & wildflower
75 kg/m²
Saturated load: brown wildflower
75 kg/m²
Water held
About 20 litres per m² The tray is the drainage layer and the water reservoir.
Plant mixes
Sedum, sedum & wildflower, brown wildflower Sedum (8–12 evergreen varieties) is the usual, lowest-maintenance choice. Sedum & wildflower adds 20–30 wildflower and meadow grass varieties. Brown wildflower has no sedum and dies back to bare in autumn and winter.
Slopes
Up to 16° is treated as flat The trays’ own weight holds them. Steeper than 16° needs restraint: a guard fixed to the membrane, or timber restraint battens fitted before the waterproofing with a drainage break every 1.5 m. Which one is the roofing contractor’s call, to suit the pitch.
Edges
Upstand or parapet, pebble margin, or aluminium guard Fatra notes that planning authorities sometimes ask for a stone border as a fire-break on commercial buildings.
Getting at the membrane
Individual trays lift out Lift one out to reach the membrane, then put it back without damaging the plants.
Maintenance
Once a year, in early autumn After the bird nesting season. No mowing, and no watering once established except in a long dry spell.
Fatra guarantee on the trays
1 year The 20-year cover is on the waterproofing underneath.
Working with a design team

How we fit into your programme.

As the sedum roof subcontractor, we slot in between the main contractor and the landscaper. Four stages, from drawings to handover.

  1. 01

    Drawings or tender pack

Send the drawings, a tender pack or a BOQ. We reply within one working day and quote commercial work within 5 working days, + VAT.

  2. 02

    Your specification

We work to your specification or the manufacturer’s. On the Sheffield job Fatra wrote it and we built to it.

  3. 03

    Sequenced on site

The main contractor finishes the structure. We lay the membrane and leak test it, then the fleece and trays go down. The landscaper carries on around it.

  4. 04

    Handover

Manufacturer warranty registered and the O&M pack issued. Fatra recommends one maintenance visit a year, in early autumn.

Email drawings, a tender pack or a BOQ to info@skyguardflatroofing.co.uk, or use the tender enquiry form. On the Sheffield job our part ran in two short visits: the membrane in June, the green roof in early July.

Paperwork

The paperwork a tender asks for.

Issued for the job, not chased after.

  • RAMS, COSHH assessments and fire/risk method statements
  • Manufacturer system specification and datasheets
  • ISO 9001, CHAS and SafeContractor certificates, on request
  • £10m public liability and £10m employer’s liability, certificates on request
  • Manufacturer warranty registration
  • O&M pack at handover
A real job, not a stock photo

A Sheffield green roof, drawn by architects. Built to Fatra’s spec.

  • A new stone-built garage on the western edge of Sheffield. The architects drew its 48 m² roof as a living roof, with stone coping all round.
  • Fatra wrote the specification, a warm roof in Fatra FF810 PVC single ply, and we built to it.
  • We electronically tested the finished membrane before the protection fleece and pre-grown Fatra Modular Trays went on.
  • Fatra’s manufacturer warranty was registered in June 2026, and the same contractor has since come back to us for their next green roof.

Where we quote for green roofs

Sheffield, especially the western and south-western suburbs: Dore, Totley, Bradway, Fulwood, Ranmoor, Ecclesall, Whirlow, Crosspool and Broomhill. Most Sheffield postcodes are about 25 minutes from our yard in Kilnhurst, South Yorkshire; S10 and S11 are about 32 minutes, and S17 about 38.

And the North East Derbyshire edge: Dronfield, Holmesfield, Eckington and Chesterfield.

FAQ

Questions from design teams

Specification, loads, domestic work, planting and aftercare.

Do you work to our specification?
Yes. We work to the architect’s specification or the manufacturer’s. On the Sheffield garage, Fatra wrote the specification and we built to it, from the vapour control layer to the through-wall outlet. We’re trained by seven manufacturers. Send the specification with the drawings and we’ll price to it.
Can you give us loads for the structural calcs?
We can give you Fatra’s published saturated weights for the tray system: 65 kg/m² for sedum, and 75 kg/m² for sedum & wildflower or brown wildflower. Saturated means fully wet, which is what the structure has to carry. The structural design and the calculations stay with your engineer, on new and existing buildings alike, and we install on the basis of their calculation.
Do you take on domestic projects for architects?
Yes. The Sheffield job was a domestic one: a new garage for a private client, with the roof drawn as a living roof by the architects. For a homeowner client our prices include VAT, and our green roof cost guide works through real sizes and prices. There’s more on green roofs on extensions, garages and garden rooms in our guide. Commercial work is quoted per job, + VAT.
Can the landscaper plant the roof instead?
We treat the Fatra trays as part of the roofing, not the planting. They arrive pre-grown and we lay them on the protection fleece once the membrane has passed its leak test, so the membrane, the test and the trays are all one package. The landscaper or garden designer leads the garden and the planting around the building, and we work alongside them. If the planting for the roof itself needs to go beyond Fatra’s three tray mixes, raise it at tender stage and we’ll talk it through with you and the landscaper.
Who looks after it after handover?
The building owner, with the O&M pack. Fatra recommends one maintenance visit a year, in early autumn once the bird nesting season is over: hand-weed unwanted seedlings, clear the outlets and gutters, feed with an organic phosphate and potassium fertiliser, keep any pebble margins clear of plants and clear fallen leaves. No mowing, and no watering once it’s established except in a long dry spell. If the sedum turns red or bronze in a dry or cold spell, it’s stressed, not dead. Owners who would rather not do the yearly visit themselves can ask about our roof maintenance plans, which cover green roofs as well as single ply.
What warranty comes with it?
The waterproofing carries a 20-year manufacturer-backed warranty on the membrane plus our own 20-year workmanship warranty, with the manufacturer warranty registered at handover. Fatra’s product guarantee on the trays is 1 year. The plants are living, so they don’t carry a 20-year warranty.
