Single Ply Roofing
— done for life.

A heat-welded membrane that flexes with your building, carries a 20-year manufacturer warranty, and outlasts the felt or GRP it replaces by 3 to 4 times. The system used on Wembley, the Emirates, and the Google Data Centre — fitted on garages, extensions, and commercial roofs across South Yorkshire.

What is it?

A welded waterproof skin — not a coating.

Single ply is a flexible, factory-made membrane (PVC, TPO, FPO or EVA) rolled onto your roof in large sheets and heat-welded at the seams. The result is one continuous waterproof surface with no glue, no laps, no failure points.

Flexible. Moves with the building — no cracking when it shrinks in winter or expands in summer.
Welded seams. Heat-fused, not glued. Stronger than the membrane itself.
Lightweight. ~1.5kg/m² — gentler on the structure than a built-up felt roof.
Recyclable. Most modern systems are 100% recyclable at end of life.

Why we recommend it

Single ply vs GRP vs felt — no contest.

Here’s how the three flat-roof systems we’re most often asked about actually compare on the metrics that matter.

Metric Single Ply GRP Fibreglass Felt
Typical lifespan 40+ years 10–15 years 10–15 years
Manufacturer warranty Up to 25 years 10 years 10 years
Flexibility Flexes with building Rigid (cracks) Moderate
Seams Heat-welded Resin-bonded Hot-bonded laps
Fire rating Broof(t4) Variable Lower
Recyclable Yes No No
Repairs after damage Easy (weld a patch) Difficult Possible
Aesthetic Modern, flush Speckled finish Coarse, gravelled

We don’t fit GRP. We’ll happily fit felt if that’s genuinely the right product (rarely it is) — but 9 jobs out of 10, single ply is the better long-term value.

The 7 systems we install

Trained on the best of British and European single ply

Most roofers are tied to one manufacturer. We’re certified across seven — so the product gets matched to the roof, not the other way round.

Where it goes

Single ply works for almost any flat roof — domestic or commercial.

A few of the most common applications we install across South Yorkshire.

House extensions

Single ply gives a flush, modern finish that suits flat-roof rear extensions and orangeries.

Garages

A clean, seamless replacement for old felt or GRP — typically £1,800–£2,500 fitted.

Dormers & balconies

Lightweight, watertight, and detailed neatly to walls, kerbs, and parapets.

Commercial roofs

Factories, warehouses, schools, retail units. Up to 25-year manufacturer warranties.

Green & blue roofs

Single ply is the substrate of choice under living roofs and stormwater-attenuating builds.

Warm-roof upgrades

Pairs perfectly with non-combustible insulation for energy-efficient retrofits.

FAQ

Common questions about single ply

Can't see your question? Call us — we'd rather have the chat than send you elsewhere.

How long does a single ply roof last?
Modern single ply membranes are tested to last 40+ years in UK conditions. Most carry manufacturer-backed warranties of 20–25 years (we offer 20 years as standard). With light periodic maintenance, the membrane often outlasts the building it sits on.
How does single ply compare to GRP fibreglass?
GRP is rigid, glued in place, and prone to cracking when the building expands and contracts — typically failing within 10–15 years. Single ply is a flexible membrane with heat-welded seams that move with the building. It also carries far better fire and slip ratings. Full breakdown here.
How does it compare to felt?
Felt was the standard for decades but degrades under UV and tears with movement. A single ply membrane lasts 3–4× as long, looks cleaner, and stays watertight at parapets, upstands, and around penetrations where felt typically fails first.
How much does a single ply roof cost?
As a guide: £90/m² for a standard replacement on an accessible roof. Scaffolding adds £1,000–£2,000 if required. Adding non-combustible insulation (a warm-roof upgrade) is +£40/m². Use the estimator for an instant range on your roof.
Which manufacturer system do you recommend?
It depends on the roof — its detailing, the size, the building use, and whether the budget is residential or commercial. Because we're trained across 7 systems (Sika, Protan, IKO, Icopal, Fatra, Alwitra and Renolit) we pick the right product for your roof, not the only one we're allowed to fit. Most domestic jobs end up in Sika Sarnafil, Protan, or Icopal — all proven UK favourites.
Is single ply fire-rated?
Yes — most of the systems we install carry Broof(t4) classification, the highest external fire rating in the UK. We can also specify FM Global approved systems for commercial projects requiring insurance-grade fire performance.
How long does an install take?
A standard domestic roof (20–40 m²) takes 1–3 days. A house extension typically takes 2–4 days. Commercial projects are scheduled and phased — we'll give you a programme at quote stage.
Will you make a mess?
No. We strip and bag the old roof, sheet protect surrounding areas, and tidy up daily. Every Google review mentions this — see for yourself.
Do you offer a guarantee?
Yes. 20-year manufacturer-backed warranty on the membrane. Workmanship is guaranteed for 10 years. Both are registered with the manufacturer on completion, so they transfer if you sell the building.
