The Challenge
Moss had taken hold along the laps of the old felt and across the low spots, which tells you the surface was staying damp for long spells. A felt roof in that state is wearing out from the top down. The roof also sits between two very different neighbours: a white rendered wall with a window above it, and the bottom edge of a clay pantile roof running down one side. Both junctions have to be made watertight without disturbing the wall or the tiles more than necessary.
Our Solution
The usual start: the old felt off, the deck checked and repaired where needed, the waste bagged and taken away. Then grey Fatra single ply across the whole roof, taken up the rendered wall as an upstand and finished neatly along the line of the pantiles.
The Outcome
A clean grey roof where there was moss. The membrane runs smoothly up to the render and along the pantiles, with none of the old patchwork left.
Is moss on a flat roof a problem?
On its own, a little moss is not a leak. But it holds water against the roof, and its roots work into the laps and cracks of an ageing felt. If a roof is mossy across most of its surface, as this one was, the felt underneath is usually near the end of its life.
Roof maintenance covers keeping a roof clear once it is done, and our pricing guide shows what a replacement costs.
