The Challenge
A roof lantern is the detail that decides whether an extension roof stays dry. The glazing sits on a raised kerb in the middle of the roof, so rain reaches it from every side, and the waterproofing has to run up the kerb and finish tight to the lantern frame all the way round. Get one corner wrong and the leak shows up on the ceiling below. This extension also meets the brick house on two sides, so there are wall upstands to make as well as the lantern.
Our Solution
The grey Fatra single ply covers the roof and is taken up the lantern kerb and up the brickwork, so the roof, the kerb and the walls are finished in the same membrane.
The Outcome
A finished roof with the lantern kerb wrapped in the same membrane. Our photos from 13 July 2025 show the kerb in the same grey as the rest of the roof, so it reads as one neat piece rather than a box sitting on top. Roofs with a lantern are the ones we allow longer for: most home roofs take a day, and two at most with lanterns or gutters.
Planning a lantern on a flat roof?
Lanterns and rooflights are one of the most popular things to add to an extension, and the main reason an extension roof takes longer than a day. Single ply for rear extensions and skylights explains how we detail them.
