The Challenge
Our before photo, taken on 25 May 2022, shows a felt roof finished with stone chippings. Much of the stone had come loose, moss was growing across the surface, and bare dark patches showed where the chippings had washed away. Against the brick pier the felt upstand had cracked, and the corner beside it had been patched with bitumen. The roof is boxed in: a brick pier, white cladding on two sides and a tiled roof edge above. Most of the work on a roof like this is at the edges, because every wall and corner is a joint that has to be made watertight.
Our Solution
A replacement starts with the old roof coming off, the deck being checked and any soft boards replaced, and the waste bagged and taken away. The new grey Fatra single ply was then turned up the brickwork and the cladding and dressed into each internal corner, including the one by the brick pier where the old felt had failed.
The Outcome
One clean grey surface, with nothing loose left on it. Where the old felt had cracked against the brick pier, the new membrane now runs straight up the wall and into the corner by the cladding.
Loose chippings and moss: what they tell you
Stone chippings were put on felt roofs to shield the felt from sunlight. Once they start coming loose, the felt underneath is exposed and ages faster, and the moss that grows in the loose stone holds water against it. If your roof looks like the before photo, it is worth getting it looked at. How long flat roofs last explains why felt fails, and single ply versus felt compares the two on cost.
