The Challenge

The extension had a rubber (EPDM) roof, and it had failed. A large glazed roof lantern takes up the middle of the roof, so most of what is left is the strip between the lantern, the house wall and the open edges. Every side of the lantern is a junction that has to be made watertight, and so is the wall.

Our Solution

Rip out and replace. In our 9.15 am photos on 25 June 2026 the rubber is already off, and the old boards underneath, stained dark and coming apart, are being torn out. The new roof is grey Fatra PVC single ply, the membrane we fit as a Fatra approved contractor, taken up the house wall and dressed round the lantern kerb.

The Outcome

Old roof off in the morning, new roof on by early afternoon. By 1.46 pm the same day, our photos show the grey Fatra PVC down across the whole roof and dressed round the lantern. Fatra roofs we fit carry a 20-year Fatra guarantee, issued once Fatra's own technician has inspected the finished roof, alongside our own workmanship guarantee.

Rubber roof failing?

EPDM, usually sold as a “rubber roof”, is a common covering on house extensions. Single ply versus EPDM compares the two, and how long flat roofs last covers what to expect from each type. When a roof has to come off, flat roof replacement explains how we do it.

Lanterns are the reason some home roofs take longer: most are done in a day, and one with lanterns or gutters to work round takes two at most. See flat roofing in Rotherham for more about the work we do locally.
